- Hamilton Rowan Gamble Papers | Letter signed Benjamin [B.R. Singleton], Portmouth, to Pa. Discussion of the changes promised here not coming about. If you have any papers giving the account of the election please send to us. We have no heard from the St. Louis Federal appointments. Who is the Custom House officer? What Taylor is that I see is elected mayor? Is it “Old Captain George?” The papers state a beautiful display was gotten up by the boatmen and speak highly of his election. There was a fight this morning in front of the Navy Yard gate and a Union man was shot. The Secessionists are determined to bring on a revolution. An attempt is being made to nominate H.A. Wise as candidate for governor. He is a scoundrel. Although Lether has been in but a few months, they will follow Texas for [Lether] is a Union man. If the state is carried out I will leave on the first boat. The Northern people are not going to give up Washington, the archives, nor their nationality. They will not consent to dating their nation from 1861, and neither will the South. I want to be on soil which will not be invaded. Individuals mentioned include Captain Levy, Hamlin, Jno. C. Smith, Bro., Chief Enginerr Brown, Major [Daniel G.] Taylor, H.A. Wise and Lether. (4 pages), 1861 Apr 5
