Ellis visits St. Louis for the purpose of organizing the Telegraph Directory and for the purpose of getting your share of the sum required for the survey of the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad Company. The Counties along the line in Illinois and Indiana have made up their quota. Will St. Louis refuse hers? The completion of the road is advantageous and necessary to the future of St. Louis. Mentions what other cities have done. Any intelligent man at St. Louis can see “that the ‘Philistines are upon you’ and unless you wake – your locks are shorn.” Individuals mentioned: Mrs. Ewing. Places mentioned: Galena, Chicago, Cairo, Ohio, Mississippi, and Michigan. [Gift of W.G.B. Carson, August 1938.], 1848 May 26
