- Saint Louis History Collection | Letter signed W. Goodell Bancroft, St. Louis, to Edward W. Bancroft. I had a pleasant journey here from Vermont and was fortunate to secure a situation as a clerk in a store. Business here is dull now because of the navigation being closed. As for the inhabitants of the western country being gamblers, cutthroats, murderers, etc. that is all humbug. I can hardly realize that I am in the far west. Discusses possibility of their sending younger brother to school so that someone in the family can be something besides a “counter jumper.” Individuals mentioned: James, Mother, Father, and Aunt. Places mentioned: Grafton, Hartford, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Cincinnati. [Purchased from Symmachus Trading Co., Boston, Mass. July 1848, $1.50.], 1841 Dec 15-Dec 26
