- Saint Louis History Collection | Letter signed J. Davis, St. Louis, to Lewis Sawyer. I have settled in my profession. Law business is very good here. Missouri is unbelievably rich in natural resources and a farmer who is industrious could do very well here and live like a prince. For real comforts of life, however, an old and established community is best. The people are often coarse and vulgar. This is a slave state but you see little or nothing of the slave system. Your brother would soon forget his abolitionism and have only contempt for the slaves. Individuals mentioned: Oliver B. and Misses Howe. Places mentioned: Illinois and New England. [Purchased from Symmachus Trading Co., Boston, Mass., September 1948, $2.25.], 1837 Sep 25
