Nothing more or less has occupied my mind than whether I should plunge myself in debt $2000 or give up all the prospects which induced me to come to this country. Now my soul always casts over my brow the dark mantle of melancholy--I have been the dupe of a hypocrite who wears the garb of religion to hide the pitchiness of his heart. We have had considerable sickness this season & many fine young men have been cut down., 1829 Aug 20
