Senator Mellen briefly discusses the Missouri Compromise, stating in part, “Here we are. Maine and Missouri are all the rage. We have taken the question as to slavery in Missouri, and the vote was yesterday. For interdicting slavery--16. Against it--27. We are now battling the watch as to the question whether the Senate will sanction the junction of the subjects in one bill by agreeing to the committee’s amendment.
