- Thomas Jefferson Collection | Letter signed David Melville, Washington City, to Thomas Jefferson, Monticello, Virginia. Lighthouses are rendered almost useless in the winter when they are needed most due to the congealing of the oil which causes the lights to go out. Melville has an invention "by which the oil is kept warm by the heat communicated to it from the flame of the same lamp." Verso: Jefferson’s draft response states that he thinks the idea ingenious and wishes Melville success, 8 February 1822. (4 pages), 1822 Jan 23
