 File — Box: 1, Folder: 6

Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The collection contains documents relating to the International Association of Black Professional Firefighters (IABPF), meeting minutes and activities of the Firefighters Institute for Racial Equality (F.I.R.E.) in St. Louis, a small amount of Daniel Austin correspondence and personal items, a group photograph (copy) including Addington Stewart, and many firefighter memorial service programs. The collection is arranged alphabetically by topic and dates from 1968 to 2015 with the bulk of the collection dating from 1970 to 1979. Most of the documents in the collection relate to Daniel Austin's involvement in IABPF and in F.I.R.E. The IABPF materials date from its founding in 1970, including input on administrative structure from the founding organizations and various fliers and reports. A flier and a list of goods needed for relief in Cairo, Illinois, during its race strikes demonstrates the scope of the group’s concern for race relations (f.11). Items related to the conventions include a note from President David Floyd after visiting St. Louis in August 1971 (f.1), the 1972 convention in St. Louis with a booklet and pre-convention meeting minutes dated 19 June 1972 (f.8), and a 1992 booklet that includes lists of past officers and a history of the IABPF (f.11). The F.I.R.E. materials include copies of bylaws and its constitution, a logo decal which shows its membership in the IABPF, correspondence to members and to Daniel Austin, meeting minutes and notes likely written by Austin in the 1970s, various items relating to written examinations for the City of St. Louis, and a few newspaper clippings. There is also a timeline of legal actions with the St. Louis Fire Department from 1974 to 2004 (f.5). There are limited items relating to the St. Louis Firefighter Association Local 73. Among these is a workbook prepared for a pay raise campaign circa 1970 and correspondence relating to another in 1979. In 1977, Local 73 was designated as the exclusive bargaining representative for all St. Louis Fire Department employees. Daniels Austin’s personal items are few and include newspaper clippings, a flier from the Missouri Coalition for Housing, 1975 Sumner High School commencement program, items related to an anniversary mass and vow renewal to celebrate the Austins’ 25th wedding anniversary, and a tribute to Dr. Eugene Tivoli Taylor (f.3).
