 File — Box: 1, Folder: 2

Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The collection includes materials collected by Constance Myles during her time in elementary school and during her senior year of high school. Items are arranged chronologically. The entries in the Constance Myles elementary school autograph album are dated June 1958, when she graduated from Banneker Elementary School. There are several blank pages at the end of the album. Most of the friends and teachers writing in Myles’ album included a sentiment or verse along with their full names. For example, Carl Mosley wrote: “In climbing the ladder to success don’t take time out to rest.” Other verses included references to rival schools in variations on: “When you marry / don’t marry no fool / marry a boy from Vashon High School.” Teachers and administrators signed the album, including Samuel Shepard, Jr. (1907-1986), who served as administrator in the Banneker District of the SLPS from 1957 to 1976. There are three items from Myles’ senior year at Vashon High School which include a graduation invitation from Jerry Lee Williams, a program and ribbon from the Colors Day which celebrated the senior class, and a 1962 commencement program.
