The Newman Family Papers consist of correspondence, blueprints, newspapers, writings, legal documents, family papers, music scores, and other materials pertaining to Eric and Evelyn Newman, their families, and children Linda Schapiro and Andrew Newman. Families include the Newman, Pfeiffer, Lilienfeld, and Maestre families on Eric Newman’s side and the Edison family on Evelyn Newman’s side. There are also documents pertaining to the Edison Brothers Stores. The collection also includes yearbooks from the John Burroughs School, monthly and yearly publications of the Edisonian and Conveyor, and newsletters from the Edison Brothers Stores housed in the Library. The collection also contains family photographs housed in Photos and Prints, videos and tapes housed in Multimedia, and objects housed in Objects and Artifacts. The Newman Family Papers is arranged by the following series:

The Eric P. Newman Series is a series consisting of documents about Eric P. Newman’s life. The subseries of the series consist of information about Eric’s childhood and career, personal correspondence, hobbies, work with MIT, and his birthdays. These are all arranged by year order.

The Evelyn Edison Newman Series is a series consisting of information about Evelyn Edison Newman and her work arranged by year and subseries Evelyn Jobs, Projects, and Project Miscellaneous.

The Eric and Evelyn Series consists of documents about Eric and Evelyn as a couple and is arranged in year order.

The Eric and Evelyn Vacation Series is a series consisting of documents pertaining to the many vacations and trips Eric and Evelyn took over their marriage starting in 1939 and ending in 2011 on a trip to Martha’s Vineyard. Documents in this series comprise of boxes and oversize folders. The box series is in year order.

The Samuel Newman Series is a series consisting of written documentation about Dr. Samuel E. Newman consisting of two archival boxes. The folders in this series are in year order.

The Newman Series consists of information about the Newman family starting with Eric P. Newman’s grandfather Elijah Newman and ending with his son Andrew Newman. The last folder in the series contains information about Eric P. Newman’s grandmother’s family, the Grunauers.

The Edison Series is a series of documents pertaining to the Edison family starting with Abraham Edison, father of the founders of Edison Brothers Store, and ending with the Harry Freund Memorial Foundation. The series also consists of a subseries about Edison Brothers Store and information on the Haas Mural painted on the Edison Warehouse, now the Edison Condominiums at 400 S 14th in St. Louis and is arranged by year.

The Miscellaneous Series is a series consisting of items connected to the family, but the owner is unknown. The order of the series begins with letters and magazines, then branches into the Monsanto subseries, ending with the stamps and postcards subseries. All are arranged by year order.

The Genealogy Series is a series of genealogical information created by the Newman and Edison families beginning with the Pfeiffer and Lilienfeld and Newman and Grunauer side—Eric Pfeiffer Newman’s family—and ending with the Edison family. The folders contain further information on family members who are not highlighted in the general collection and their relationships via partial family trees, family history binder, and other genealogical information.
