Diary dated April 17–October 5, 1860, contains account of a trip from Jerseyville, Illinois, to the Pikes Peak gold rush region, via St. Joseph, Missouri, Denver, and Golden City. Notation in front of diary reads, “A.T. Bartlett of Jerseyville, Illi By Dr. J.C. Hamilton April 17, 1860” (120 pages). Among the travel company who departed Jerseyville were S.W. Davis, Ed Van Dyke, R. Newton, Fry, Vorhes, and Page. Mentions several graves they passed along the overland route, including Wm. Kirk of Franklin County, Illinois, who died October 15, 1859 (original diary, page 17; typescript copy, page 4); T.J. Asher who died April 16, 1860 (original diary, page 28; typescript copy, page 6); C.W. Shermer (original diary, page 28; typescript copy, pages 6-7); Mrs. Susan C. Hale, age 34, of Lafayette County, Missouri, who died June 1852 (original diary, page 35; typescript copy, page 8); T. Rice of Niles, Michigan, who was accidentally shot March 25, 1860 (original diary, page 47; typescript copy, page 10); Mr. Painter, age 19, of Lewis town, Cass County, Iowa, who died May 9, 1860 (original diary, page 49; typescript copy, page 11); and D. Thompson, Q. Stanley, and D.W. Brown of Jefferson County, Iowa, who were killed by lightning July 10, 1860 (original diary, page 109; typescript copy, page 25). Also mentions inquest on the body of Jas. McConahae, formerly of Indiana, which took place at California Gulch, August 13, 1860 (original diary, page 100; typescript copy, page 22). B.S.
