Typescript copy titled "Journal of a Trip Across the Plains from Independence, Missouri to California, May 11, 1850-October 11, 1850" by Micajah Littleton. Describes journey mostly with the Glenn & Co. wagon train from Independence, Missouri, to Fremont, California. Entries begin at Independence and trace the progress of the wagon train to Fort Kearney, along the North Platte River, to Chimney Rock, Fort Laramie, Salt Lake City, and Fremont, California. The journal includes descriptions and accounts of the landscape along the route; sickness; condition of wagon road; and the breaking down of wagons. Journal also includes mentions of more than 300 graves of emigrants along the route; the name, age, place of origin, and death date of the emigrant are usually recorded. Scope and Contents
The collection consists primarily of the overland journal and correspondence of Henry Atkinson Stine to his mother, dated 1850, which recount his experiences on an overland journey with the Glenn & Co. wagon train from Independence, Missouri, to California. The collection also contains the notebook of Mary Ann Garrett Stine (daughter of Jacob R. and Emily Stine) while attending Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Missouri, in 1838; other papers of the Stine family; and a typescript copy of the journal of Micajah Littleton, who also traveled on the Glenn & Co. wagon train from Independence to California in 1850.
