Journal of Henry A. Stine. Describes journey mostly with the Glenn & Co. wagon train to California. Entries begin at Fort Kearney and trace the progress of the wagon train along the North Platte River, to Chimney Rock, Fort Laramie, Salt Lake City, and California via the Humboldt River. The journal includes descriptions and accounts of Fort Kearney; Chimney Rock; Fort Laramie; buffalo hunting; food and water; sickness; encounters with Indians; river crossings; mosquitoes; and Salt Lake City and the Mormon community. Scope and Contents
The collection consists primarily of the overland journal and correspondence of Henry Atkinson Stine to his mother, dated 1850, which recount his experiences on an overland journey with the Glenn & Co. wagon train from Independence, Missouri, to California. The collection also contains the notebook of Mary Ann Garrett Stine (daughter of Jacob R. and Emily Stine) while attending Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Missouri, in 1838; other papers of the Stine family; and a typescript copy of the journal of Micajah Littleton, who also traveled on the Glenn & Co. wagon train from Independence to California in 1850.
