Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The collection is comprised of land records, a wedding anniversary celebration document, a notary certificate, and genealogical data relating to the Von Phul, Saugrain, and Provenchere families arranged alphabetically by topic. It dates from 1850 to circa 2020. There is a large date gap from 1874 to 2019. The genealogical information shows the relationship between the donor and the Saugrain, Von Phul, Chouteau, and Michel families. There is an invitation for the golden wedding anniversary celebration for Mr. and Mrs. Henry Von Phul in 1866. Finally, there are documents concerning a lot in City Block 48, which concerns the estate of Peter Provenchere, Sr. There was a court case surrounding the lots in City Block 48. [See also Saugrain-Michau Family Papers (A1477), B2/f.1.] Peter Provenchere, Jr. preceded his father in death and left four heirs. One of the heirs was Marie Elise Provenchere who married Frederick Saugrain. Documents relating to the case include a draft of an 1850 letter by Marie ("Mary") Provenchere to the U.S. Congress; a list of the heirs of Peter Provenchere, Jr.; and a title abstract of City Block No. 48 by Sterling’s Abstracts of Land Titles (St. Louis County) dated March 17, 1870. Governor Silas Woodson appointed Antoine Pierre Saugrain as a notary public for St. Louis County. Woodson signed a large certificate dated September 2, 1873, to note the appointment.
