 File — Box: 1, Folder: 1

Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The collection is comprised of a scrapbook kept by Margaret Casey during her senior year at Soldan High School in 1912 and commencement announcements and programs for William Jerome Casey’s matriculations in 1922 and 1926 from Soldan High School and Washington University respectively. The collection is arranged alphabetically by name and dates from 1910 to 1930. The bulk of the collection dates from 1910 to 1913 with the following date gaps: 1915 to 1921, 1923 to 1925, and 1927 to 1929. Margaret Casey’s high school scrapbook is a preprinted volume with a soft cover, page numbers, and a table of contents. It is entitled The Girl Graduate: Her Own Book, designed and illustrated by Louise Perret and Sarah K. Smith and published by The Reilly and Britton Company of Chicago. Loose items in the scrapbook are located in a folder and are filed according to the page numbers between which they were found. The scrapbook includes identified individual class photos and a group photo of Soldan teachers that appears to have been cut from Soldan’s The Scrip, which later became the school's yearbook. There are two photographs of Mildred Tobin and Teresa Kennedy posing with tennis rackets (p.32). Margaret included invitations and programs for commencement exercises at other schools (e.g., Visitation Academy, East St. Louis High School) and programs for area school theatrical performances. The scrapbook also includes several more yearbook excerpts, newspaper clippings, and some scattered party favors and cards. Margaret saved her high school report cards and certificates from night school classes, which she completed in April 1915, which included typewriting, bookkeeping, and advanced dictation. The last item in the scrapbook was a 1930 letter written by the Treasury Department’s Internal Revenue agent in charge in St. Louis requesting Miss Casey’s transfer from the Kansas City Prohibition Office. Items relating to William Jerome Casey include the June 1922 commencement announcement for Soldan High School and an invitation to Commencement Week at Washington University in June 1926. A leather booklet containing the commencement week program of events and lists of graduates along with a program for the graduation exercises held on June 8, 1926, accompany the invitation.
