Letter signed J[ohn] D[ougherty], Near Liberty, Clay County, Missouri, to Col. Robert Campbell. A.G. Reed arrived at my house this morning from Fort Kearny very unexpectedly. He reached there safely with the loss of only one oxen. We are 500 bushels of oats behind in our contract and this must be forwarded to Reed at Sonora with the least possible delay. Major Wood’s proposal to take three or four thousand bushels of corn and oats from us is a first-rate offer provided we can procure the grain in the neighborhood of St. Louis. We will have 50 teams to run through the summer and Reed thinks we can haul all the stores for Kearny and the grain besides. Individuals mentioned: Col. Mackay, Lt. Davis, Major Eaton, and Capt. Love. Places mentioned: Fort Leavenworth and Laramie., 1850 May 16
