Autograph Album (with case), 1832-1833

 File — Box: 1, Folder: 1

Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The autograph album is comprised of one bound volume and several loose pages containing notes written to Sophia von Leveling by various individuals from October 1832 to February 1833. There is also one photograph of Sophia and Edward Haren’s grave marker in Bellefontaine Cemetery dated circa 1900. The album and its loose items are arranged chronologically.

The album’s notes are written in old German script with two exceptions, one in French and a brief note in English. There are two unidentified pencil sketches of a man and a woman included with the notes among the loose pages. Most notes are dated and signed by their authors. It is unclear why the album was created, possibly when Sophia finished school or perhaps due to her approaching marriage to Edward Haren and their subsequent move to North America.
