Letter signed Alex [Badger], Camp Douglas, U.T., to Mother [Mrs. Alexander Badger, Sr., St. Louis]. A pleasant ride yesterday up Parleys Canyon. Now I am free until Brigham gets back to the city from his summer tour. Then I have a lot of accounts to settle with the old fellow, which will occupy me for near two months; after which I hope the Lord will deliver me from the land of Zion. If this is the valley where the Lord intends to corral the saints, I would rather dwell with the lost sheep somewhere in the Mississippi Valley or California. Lengthy description of the valley. Illustrates some of the sad aspects of Mormonism. I went up Parleys Canyon yesterday to meet some friends coming from the east by stage. We had a carriage and four horses and three horsemen. There were six in the carriage – Billy Gilbert, Horace Wheat, Miss Lamoreaux, Mrs. Balt. Messrs. Carleton, Ellsworth and Fippin rode horseback. Mr. Gilbert and Mrs. Belt’s daughter, Nannie Belt, were the parties we went to meet. Long paragraph on their cook “exchanging nice dishes” with Colonel Evans and Captain Wallace. He is getting fat on the good things the ex-cook of the King of Denmark provides. Individuals mentioned: Alice [Badger Cayton] and Mrs. James., 1863 May 10
