Letter signed Alex [Badger, Fort Vancouver, W.T.], to Ma [Mrs. Alexander C. Badger]. We received news yesterday by pony express of the secession movements in the South. It is very unwelcome news and I hope matters may be adjusted without serious difficulty. Do not send any more newspaper unless an occasional “Advocate.” Today is Thanksgiving Day. I went to Dr. McCarty’s church, and later attended a soldier’s burial. Description. Uncle Sam, I find, is a much better and more liberal employer than I have ever had before. Mr. Wagner says he would rather live out here and be somebody than live in the “States” and be nobody. The wife of our mayor, Mr. Stryker, died today. I have been making some calculations and find that I have expended about $2.00 per day since I have been here., 1860 Nov 29
