Scout Event Programs / Pledge of Allegiance Cards, 1954-1959
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of three programs for events that took place at the Arena and two pledge of allegiance cards.
Two of the event programs are for the biennial Jubilee Circus in which cub scouts and boy scouts performed skits, reenactments, and demonstrations of scouting skills. Packs and troops from the entire council participated. The first program is from the 24th Biennial Circus held in 1957 and the second is from the 25th Biennial Circus held in 1959. Morton D. May, of Famous-Barr department stores, served as the chairman for the 25th circus and its program provided some history about the event, noting that the first circus was held in 1923. The third event program is from the 22nd Biennial Boy Scout Exposition of 1958 during which scouts provided art, science, and craft exhibits and educational activities which reflected the skills they learned as they advanced in the program. All three programs provide lists of events and exhibits and directories of participating packs and troops along with the names of their sponsors.
The Pledge of Allegiance card (two copies) informs us that “this is the new Pledge of Allegiance as adopted by the 83rd Congress of the Unites States, 1954.” The cards were presented by the Allied Veterans Americanism Commission of Greater St. Louis. National organizations listed on the cards include: American Legion, American Veterans of World War II, Catholic War Veterans, Disabled American Veterans, Jewish War Veterans of the U.S., Marine Corps League, Military Order of the Purple Heart, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S.
