The collection dates from 1966 to 1972 and is comprised of documents from the Selective Service and correspondence relating to Michael A. Klenc’s registration and classification. The papers are arranged chronologically with the bulk of the items dating 1970. There are no items dating 1967 to 1969.

Klenc’s Selective Service registration card is dated 1966. Three statements of acceptability from 1970 and 1971 listed Klenc as “not acceptable for induction under current circumstances,” after failing three physicals due to being underweight. On July 10, 1970, Klenc wrote a letter, presumably to the local draft board, stating that he is a conscientious objector and requesting the special form required to apply for such status. After receiving the forms, four people sent letters to the chairman of the local draft board (Ferguson, Missouri) supporting Klenc’s application: Paul D. Felton of Saint Louis University, his father Edward A. Klenc, Rev. Thomas F. Waldron of Moreau Seminary, and friend Patrick Bailey of East St. Louis. On the special form, and the additional pages, Klenc explained his personal beliefs that led him to declare himself a conscientious objector. In July 1972, Klenc received a classification certificate declaring his 4-F status.
