Letter signed Thomas W. Gilmer, Charles Carter, Thomas W. Maury, David Anderson and William Woods to Mrs. Lucy Marks, Albemarle. “In communicating the accompanying proceedings of a meeting of our fellow citizens, we hope you will allow us to mingle our sympathies with those of a mother, while we would render great tribute of affection and honor to your son, the mother of Meriwether Lewis can best appreciate the loss which his country sustained in his premature death . . .” They believe it is their duty to collect facts about the history of Meriwether Lewis for the interest of the public. They request that his family communicate such incidents as may serve to illustrate the strong traits of his character, as well as his habits and personality in his early life, “and any incident which may serve to shew forth the man as he was.” (2 pages), 1835 Dec 3
