Letter signed Meriwether Lewis, St. Louis, to Col. Thomas Hunt, Belle Fontain. He is urging Hunt to dispatch Capt. Clemson’s company as early as possible to the Fire Prairie and feels that when the secretary at war has received his communication he will approve the move as well as the site selected for the factory and fort. He discusses troop movements including General Clark’s movement by land to Fire Prairie, possible intentions of the Indians, supply needs, plans to fortify and prepare themselves for the onset of winter as the Indians.
