Letter signed G.K. McGunnegle, House of Reps., to J.F. Darby [John F. Darby], Saint Louis. Concerning bank legislation. States that they defeated the proposition to amend the bill by inserting 3/5 as the proportion of stock to be owned by the state. They will defeat the sinking fund section and carry an additional section making it incumbent on the Directory to sell the stock over 1/2 that the state may have to subscribe in the event of individuals failing to take it whenever it will bring a price of 5%. Mentions some names for the probable directors, and states that he got the bill to divorce the Sheriff and Collector’s offices through both houses. Jamison has done himself great credit. Scope and Contents
This collection consists largely of the papers of John F. Darby and his wife Mary F. Darby, and relates mostly to the political, social, and business history of St. Louis. The papers also include family correspondence with relatives in North Carolina, Kentucky, and Missouri, and correspondence regarding legal and business matters. Of special note are the minute books of the Jefferson Society and the St. Louis Debating Club (1827-1828), both regional debating societies of which Darby was a member; letters of Mary F. Darby; correspondence with Montgomery Blair, William T. Sherman, and George Caleb Bingham; and fragments of a history of the Mormons by John Corrill, dated 1839.
