Letter signed L.F. Linn [Lewis F. Linn], Washington City, to J.F. Darby [John F. Darby], St. Louis, Missouri. States that the bill confirming the French and Spanish claims came in the Senate for discussion and he hopes that the report of the proceedings will satisfy Darby’s question concerning the title to his property. Linn considers all previous claims under the United States completely protected by the decision of the Supreme Court and by the bill confirming the report of the commissioners which passed the Senate in the current session. He hopes that an appropriation of $20,000 for removing sandbars and for surveying various rivers may pass the House. Scope and Contents
This collection consists largely of the papers of John F. Darby and his wife Mary F. Darby, and relates mostly to the political, social, and business history of St. Louis. The papers also include family correspondence with relatives in North Carolina, Kentucky, and Missouri, and correspondence regarding legal and business matters. Of special note are the minute books of the Jefferson Society and the St. Louis Debating Club (1827-1828), both regional debating societies of which Darby was a member; letters of Mary F. Darby; correspondence with Montgomery Blair, William T. Sherman, and George Caleb Bingham; and fragments of a history of the Mormons by John Corrill, dated 1839.
