Letter signed T.F. Smith, Rock Island, to John F. Darby, St. Louis, Mo. Acknowledges receipt of $608.62 made up by certain of the owners of the Dubuque grant for the purpose of paying for the survey and meeting other contingent expenses to be incurred on account of the same. States that he has employed a Mr. Harrison, a government surveyor, to do the work. Relates the manner in which he has ordered the survey to be made and asks to be corrected if he is not right. Brings up the question as to whether, the land having been divided, it will need separate tenants. He has gotten Judge Doty [J.D. Doty] to defend their interests against the United States and other trespassers as well as to tend to other legal interests. Persons mentioned include Mr. G.W. This collection consists largely of the papers of John F. Darby and his wife Mary F. Darby, and relates mostly to the political, social, and business history of St. Louis. The papers also include family correspondence with relatives in North Carolina, Kentucky, and Missouri, and correspondence regarding legal and business matters. Of special note are the minute books of the Jefferson Society and the St. Louis Debating Club (1827-1828), both regional debating societies of which Darby was a member; letters of Mary F. Darby; correspondence with Montgomery Blair, William T. Sherman, and George Caleb Bingham; and fragments of a history of the Mormons by John Corrill, dated 1839.
