Letter signed Jane McDaniel, Caswell County, North Carolina, to John F. Darby, St. Louis, Missouri. States that she wants her grandson to come there if it is ever convenient. She thinks that perhaps he can do something with Price, who is impossible to put up with. She thinks also that he could possibly help his Aunt Sally obtain a divorce from Price, although the lawyer there says that the only way would be to prove positively that he (Price) had taken up with a lewd woman. Writes of some property that she and her husband have just bought, worth about a thousand dollars, which she will leave to Darby. States that Uncle John McDaniel has been acquitted except he is to be imprisoned for six months and after that branded on the ball of his left thumb with the letter “M.” Persons mentioned include Mr. Yancey, Mr. Smith, and Mary Smith. Places mentioned include Griers Meeting House. Document also includes letter signed Thomas W. Yealock to John F. Darby. Letter of friendship discussing intentions of studying law and then removing to Alabama or Missouri. Yealock has not married yet, but expects to someday., 1828 May 10

This collection consists largely of the papers of John F. Darby and his wife Mary F. Darby, and relates mostly to the political, social, and business history of St. Louis. The papers also include family correspondence with relatives in North Carolina, Kentucky, and Missouri, and correspondence regarding legal and business matters. Of special note are the minute books of the Jefferson Society and the St. Louis Debating Club (1827-1828), both regional debating societies of which Darby was a member; letters of Mary F. Darby; correspondence with Montgomery Blair, William T. Sherman, and George Caleb Bingham; and fragments of a history of the Mormons by John Corrill, dated 1839.
