Letter signed W.M. O.H. [William M. O’Hara], Pittsburgh, to Mr. Abm. Beck [Abraham Beck], St. Louis, Missouri. States that he has as yet received no communication from Mr. Beck, and he is sure that the letter has miscarried. For that reason he would like to have Mr. Beck write at once. States that the young man who wrote respecting establishing in St. Louis is uncertain whether he will be able to raise his share of the funds and that with very little expense Beck could have the whole establishment. Mentions an excellent press being for sale in Cincinnati and type being available in Pittsburgh for cash. He cannot obtain any considerable credit due to Sam Jones’ failure, which operates against him. Asks for $500 with which to procure an entire establishment. Persons mentioned include Mr. Way, Messrs. Scope and Contents
This collection consists largely of the papers of John F. Darby and his wife Mary F. Darby, and relates mostly to the political, social, and business history of St. Louis. The papers also include family correspondence with relatives in North Carolina, Kentucky, and Missouri, and correspondence regarding legal and business matters. Of special note are the minute books of the Jefferson Society and the St. Louis Debating Club (1827-1828), both regional debating societies of which Darby was a member; letters of Mary F. Darby; correspondence with Montgomery Blair, William T. Sherman, and George Caleb Bingham; and fragments of a history of the Mormons by John Corrill, dated 1839.
