Letter signed R.C., E. Saginaw, Michigan, to Mother. Was much pleased with trip to St. Louis. The Church of the Messiah royally entertained the delegates. It is a new church costing $107,000. There were thirty ministers present. St. Louis is a very substantial city, built chiefly of brick and stone. The drawbacks are the soot from the soft coal which gives a dingy appearance to all the houses and blackens one’s nose; the practice of macadamizing the streets with a soft limestone which quickly grinds to powder causing a disagreeable dust; and the water which is of an objectionable color and full of sediment. Individuals mentioned: E.D. Draper, Ballou, Uncle Robert, Julia Norris, Goldsmith, Weld, Chapin, Dr. and Mrs. Parrish, Mr. and Mrs. Ware, Lizzie, Gus, Emma Adams, Gannett, Vila Blake, Gordon, Kittredge, Elder, Forbush, Learriard, and Brooke Herford. Places mentioned: Milwaukee, E. Lexington, Detroit, Exeter, Kendrington, Chicago, Mississippi River, East St. Louis, Hopedale, and Ionia. [Gift of Pollard C. Wreath, 804 Pierce Bldg., March 1948.], 1881 May 9
