As I am writing this the Planter’s Mills are burning and the fire engines puffing and whistling like fury. The weather is very hot here and in church everyone fans himself constantly. Over the 4th of July I hope to get away and look at the prairies now in full bloom. There is scarcely a soldier here now and only militiamen [Gobblers] are left to guard the city and prisons. Business is brisk but the Government is supporting the people. Secessionists talk very bold in the few weeks past and there will be an exciting time in the coming election for president. Master mechanics here are not anxious for contracts and journeymen are striking every few days. Mechanics and laborers are in abundance but they spend three days of every week in the beer saloons. They are earning so much that they will not work half the time. Any kind of mechanics is worth $3.50 to $4.00 per day.
