Letter signed William [Claghorn] to Wife [Emma]. The more I go west the more I am surprised at the eastern views of the western country. Temperance has made great alteration in the minds of the people. I have scarcely seen a drop of liquor. Gambling is the same way. There are about 200 Dutch emigrating on account of their religion. Sunday on the boat was as quiet as it would have been at home., 1847 June 23
