Dr. [Ebenezer] March is a man of property, mayor of that city and president of the Alton Branch of the Illinois Bank; he is a widower with two children. Stephen Pierson was in town from Alton yesterday. My friend Mr. Bacon, a fine man, leaves in a week for Boston. His sister, Mrs. Jones, and Dr. Jones have been kind in introducing me to society here. Mr. [Geo. W.] Farrington is well as is Isaac S. Smyth; Ed Harris. Our city is quite active, 400 good dwellings going up, the river is good navigation. The Whigs are active, and the Old Hero will carry all the western states but Mo. The sheriff has just come in and says, Kimball, you must appear as a juryman at Circuit Court.
