Letter signed John R. Kimball, St. Louis, to Augustine P. Kimball. You must come to see our romantic country. We are ½ way post to the Pacific. We are building a fine reputation in St. Louis and have many business friends. A grand auction business could be built up here. I have taken an interest in the Whig cause. “The old Harrison Flag waves high over our thriving State. We are going it with a rush, & shall stop nothing short of the political damnation of Tom Benton.” The shoe dealers have failed to a great extent in our city as well as many dry goods dealers, but the clothing dealers do not. Individuals mentioned: Tom Benton, Arthur, Thos. J. Homer, John Dunning, C.S. Rogers, F.G. Settle, Gilbert Conant, and H.S. Chan. Places mentioned: Boston, Roxbury, Northampton, Philadelphia, New York, New Orleans, and Pacific., 1840 July 20
