Letter signed J. Davis, St. Louis, to Lewis Bristol. There are several balls in St. Louis tonight to celebrate the 22nd [George Washington's birthday]. After attending two dancing schools, however, I cannot dance. Bad times do not affect the pleasures of these western people. Whiskey is always in demand and grog shops are much patronized. We have had a slight fall of snow which shows you western life in all its glory. I wish you would come to St. Louis. There is going to be a lot of work for engineers here. The city is considering taking half of the stock of the Iron Mountain Railroad. The Mountain is eighty miles from St. Louis with a “quantity of iron sufficient to supply the world for thousands of years.” Individuals mentioned: James W. Tucker, Miss Haton[?], Dr. R., Mitchell, and Johnston. Places mentioned: New Haven and Yale. [Puchased from Symmachus Trading Co., Boston, Mass., October 1945, $1.50.], 1838 Feb 22
