Letter signed E. Brown Hornor, St. Louis, to John S. Halloway, Philadelphia. Mine is said to be the handsomest store in this city of St. Louis, the worst, most dissipated and rascally place that ever a human being set foot in to dwell. They have been upon me for a license as they call it but an oppressive unjust and exhorbitant tax. Suggests a treatment “purgative & vomatif” by a Frenchman named Le Roy as a cure for Halloway’s illness., 1828 Dec 29
