Letter signed L.M. Nute, St. Louis, to Father, Jonathan, Milton, N.H. Since I left you I have visited Kentucky and Tennessee. It was here I met the hero of Orleans, Genl. [Andrew] Jackson, and have seen him many times at Nashville. So much has been said of the General, it would be out of place for a young man to comment, but to you I say it is my opinion that the eastern states should close in with the present administration. I later visited Natchez; ascended the Arkansas, about 800 miles, to Cantonement Gibson. I was much pleased with the new country. Noticed the Indian tribes on the River exhibited many marks of civilization. I have been ordered to this city in the recruiting service. Places mentioned: Louisville, Ky., and Ohio., 1828 Feb 14
