Biography
Henry Ziegenhein was the 29th mayor of St. Louis, serving from 1897-1901. He was a leader in the St. Louis Republican Party and served as a member of the City Council from 1881-1885, then as a member of the Missouri State Legislature. In 1889, he was elected to the office of the city collector and he was elected mayor in the spring of 1897. As mayor, Ziegenhein oversaw construction of the new City Hall, as well as repairs to the City Hospital after the tornado of 1896.
Ziegenhein was born on a farm in St. Louis County in 1845. He came to the city of St. Louis to apprentice as a carpenter, and after serving in the Union Army during the Civil War, he started a contracting and building business. He married Catherine Henkle (1846-1902) in 1869, and they had nine children.
After his time as mayor, Ziegenhein took an active role in directing the affairs of Lafayette Bank, where he was one of the largest stockholders. He died in 1910.
