Biography

Wilbur Louis "Bud" Mattox was born in Sullivan, Missouri in 1916 and died in Sullivan in 1977. During the 1940s-1960s, he amassed an important and influential collection of prehistoric Native American artifacts from the Lower Meramec River Valley Region. He also operated a sign painting business and was elected to serve as an alderman in Sullivan. He is buried in the Sullivan Independent Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery.

The Bud Mattox Native American Artifacts Photograph Collection contains four photographs documenting Wilbur Louis “Bud” Mattox's collection of prehistoric Native American artifacts. During the 1940s-1960s, Mattox amassed an important and influential collection of artifacts from the Lower Meramec River Valley Region. The photographs show Mattox's displays of stone axes, arrowheads, and other artifacts. Two of the photographs show two men examining the collection.
