Biography

Freeman was born in Tupelo, Mississippi in 1915, and his family moved to St. Louis when he was seven. He earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Lincoln University in Jefferson City in 1938 and attended Columbia University's graduate program in New York. He was the head of a financial management branch of the Mobility Command Department of the Army in St. Louis. While working for the Army in 1961, he was presented with a service award for developing a special scheduling technique and was also selected as employee of the year. He later taught computer programming at Illinois Community College in East St. Louis for 17 years before retiring in 1987. He was an active member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the American Association of University Professors, and the Lincoln University Alumni Association. He married civil rights activist Frankie Muse in 1938, and they had two children together. Freeman died in St. Louis on July 12, 1991, after suffering six heart attacks in five years.
