Central Rowing Club

 Organization

Biography

The CRC clubhouse was across from Petrosky’s Bakery when located on Angelica Street, and held a bowling alley in its lower level for the use of its members. CRC was often considered the premiere rowing club in the region, due to the number of members and awards. When the Mississippi River levee was constructed in the 1950s, rowing on the river was no longer viable due to the resulting swifter current and heavy commercial traffic. The clubhouse was therefore moved to north of Watkins Creek and the Chain of Rocks Bridge. There, it consisted mostly of a bar. The clubs boats were moved to Creve Coeur and possibly transferred to other ownership.
