Biography

The 27th Fighter Squadron is the oldest fighter squadron in the Air Force. Originally part of the Aviation Sector of the Signal Corps, the squadron was organized as the 27th Aero Squadron at Kelly Field, Texas in May 1917. It transitioned to the newly organized United States Air Force during the course of World War I. In 1918, the 27th Aero Squadron was assigned to the First Pursuit Group and is now known at the First Operations Group.

Scope and Contents The Joseph G. Broz album documents Broz’s experience serving with the 27th Aero Squadron and First Pursuit Group during World War I. The album, assembled by Broz in 1979, includes an extensive first-hand narrative describing the everyday life of a soldier in the unit, illustrated by a variety of photographs.
